PostSubject: Puncture Safe?   Mon Aug 24, 2009 10:26 pm

Well I got my first puncture today! Sad Its not quite as bad as it sounds but there is a huge nail or something in my rear tyre which either has not gone all the way through or has gone through and is acting as a temporary plug. Question

I have got myself organised with Neil from Pitmeddon who by coincidence works (in his day job) not far from me in Dyce Wink, so he's going to have a look for me tomorrow and get me sorted out. Thanks to Diane and Keith for the tip and I will try to get him to offer a club discount - perhaps in return for an advertising slot in the newsletter? Is that allowed Question

Anyway this episode has prompted me to look cyclops for puncture repair kits (on ebay of course), and I have come across this 'puncturesafe' product which according to their website is altogether the best thing since sliced bread. cheers
So I thought I would ask the 'experts' - has anyone any experience of this stuff? Does it work and is it worth the investment Question

That's it, if anyone has anything to add, I'd be grateful to hear.

Mike P.

There are at least 2 problems with ultraseal and stuff that goes into the tyre to prevent punctures.
1. a screw (or something) can puncture the tyre, wreck it, leaving it in a dangerous condition, and you won't know about it.
2. When you go to change the tyre, it may severely piss the tyre fitter off.

Check out this thread for other options. The Pocket Tyre Plugger has been used twice on club runs succesfully, after trying other methods that failed.

The tyre plugger is the dogs nads! Shocked

Seen it work and also saw similar plug hold my own tyre together while on Isle of Mann at silly speeds not recommended after punture repair Shocked Shocked Shocked

Just bought one for German trip - hope we don't need it but at least I have it.

Neil is a lovely, very genuine guy, so I would trust his judgement if he says the puncture is not safe to repair. He also has come up with the best prices on tyres (well for Dunlop Roadsmarts anyway). And, even better, he doesn't expect me to push my bike up / down some ridiculous ramp, or help balance it on some axle stand thingies! Gets my vote every time! cheers
After more than 20 years of being married to a hazard magnet James has admitted defeat and now not only carries a puncture repair kit (no idea which one), but also a compressor to pump up my tyres later. I think he did some modification to his cigarette lighter socket that was already on his bike. Naturally, the one night he wasn't carrying it was the very same night I had another puncture. I like to think of it as an insurance policy - the more he carries it the less likely he is to need to use it. lol!

The stop and go pocket tire plugger has been seen working and lasting very well .

I think Alec S ( CBF1000 , Gold ) has some exta kits .

Bye the way I am not going to make Wednesday night run due to a family mix up .

Cheers

Hi folks,
Thanks for the replies, I appreciate the comments and assistance. Smile

I went, under advice, to Neil in Pitmeddon tonight and he had me sorted in no time, plugged the hole with some sort of thingy which seems to have done the trick. He reckons it should last until the tyre is done.

Actually he is a very helpful bloke, he didn't mind my poking my nose into everything he was doing and he answered all my very inexperienced questions with a happy attitude. I would definitely go back to him again.

I also asked him about business and he said that the economic downturn had left him pitifully short of work No, which is a shame for a self employed small business. I was aiming at a discount for club members in return for advertising in the news letter, but he declined the offer on the grounds that he couldn't get any cheaper as it is, but said that he would be available at any time (within reason) ie evenings and weekends to fix things when other places might be shut. One other thing that impressed me was that he had a fairly tidy garage, which I think is always a good sign.

His view on puncturesafe was remarkably close to Ali's comments, that it would upset a repair fitter. He said that the only thing which should be between a wheel and the road is air, and I guess he has a point.

That's all folks.

Mike P - back on the road! bounce

Was the plug put in from inside the tyre ?
i.e.did he remove the tyre to repair it ?
External plugs generally are not recommended for anything other emergency "Get Home" repairs and usually at reduced speed in case they should fail.
If it was external , which make , as would like to know if an permanent external repair is now possible as would save a trip to the tyre-fitter Smile (Of course would always be wise to chcek the condition of the tyre internally in case other , unseen , damage had occurred that may cause the tyre to fail at a later date.

Hi Allan,
The repair was done from the inside. He took the wheel off and had the tyre off in about 5 seconds, before I even had my helmet and gloves off!

The repair has already seen me take the bike on a Germany tour covering 1500 miles without incident or even the loss of a single psi. I'm fairly happy that it'll last.

Mike. Very Happy

Thats good news that it was an internal repair , they last forever !
I was only concerned when you referred to a "plug thingy" as the internal repair is usually a vulcanised patch not a plug so cannot be thrown out with centrifugal force.
Happy biking Smile
