PostSubject: Shire Blood Run   Thu Jan 08, 2009 12:34 am

I've had an email from a Jim Conway about a run out on Sunday 17th May. All I know is it's due to tak place between 1100 and 1700. I don't have full details (like location etc) but will let everyone know when I do.

I get the impression he's looking for people to give blood as part of the event - or if you can't then bring a donor on the run.

Sounds like it could be fun and for a good cause. Original FM are due to be there along with other "entertainment"

He mentions a guy called Frank McGregor who's also organising the event - known to some of you out there apparently?

Anyway keep an eye on the website and here for more details. Full details should be in a later issue of the Newsletter as well.

Yes Frank is ex IAM, he rides a Harley and goes to the rallies, He has a Fat Boy I think, So could be several hundred of them there.
Frank is the only Harley man I know who uses it when it is snowing!

I reckon it would be fine - they don't ask if you're driving/riding home after giving blood - at least they didn' when I last gave about 4 years ago. Good point though - I'll look into it

Well I had a look at the Scotblood site and their leaflet doesn't mention anything about driving or riding after giving blood as being unadvisable. It does however say:
"A few people feel faint during or after giving blood. If this
happens, please let one of our staff know immediately. Our
staff are fully trained to take care of you and will make sure
that you do not leave the session until you are feeling well.
After giving blood it is advisable not to smoke for at least an
hour
. If you do, the effect of the nicotine can make you feel
a little unwell. We also advise you to drink plenty of nonalcoholic
fluids. Avoid strenuous exercise or any hazardous
occupations or hobbies until the next day, in case you
become weak or light headed
. Our staff can advise if this
applies to you.
If you feel faint after leaving the session you should lie down
straight away. Call us for advice on 0845 30 17 2 70 or
contact your GP."

Feeling weak or lightheaded after giving blood is common, usually within the first hour. However, it is not unusual (but not common) to feel like that a few hours later, particularly if you feel fine and then go on with normal activities. I ran into this problem canoeing a few hours after giving blood (the strenuous exercise bit that at the time I was not told about) and had to be pulled out of the River Dee. I suspect a sudden rise in blood pressure - like when a car pulls out in front of you - might be enough to trigger a problem. Then again, we are desperately short of blood and all you would have to do is lie down at the roadside for a while!!! Could liven up the day a bit!

Well I made an enquiry with ScotBlood a few weeks ago and they phoned me today to respond to the query. Their advice is NOT to ride a motorcycle for 24 hours after giving blood. However it's ok to drive a car! Go figure.

Great work Phil checking it out , I didn't want to seem a kill joy but equally didn't want any incidents either.
May be if the ride-out is at the start and those wanting to give blood could then go straight home if they are local it would be an acceptable risk but guess that has to be a personal choice.
With the ride-out afterwards the risk of fainting and being unable to get to a safe place quickly enough would be too much of a risk for me and I would not want a lengthy ride home.

I couldn't find much on the net about this apart from the small ad on the HDRCGB website. Is the ride-out before or after giving blood? I would like to give blood but definately wouldn't ride afterwards - well, I don't really LIKE to, but I would Laughing

Well since the initial email alerting me of the event and asking me for support I've had nothing. Most of the information on this thread has come from other posters and my contact with the blood people.

I was promised more details nearer the time but so far this hasn't materialised. As soon as I get any more info I'll post ut here and put an entry in the subsequent newsletter.

HTH

Phil

There was someone handing out leaflets about giving blood at the egg run. I think I still have it in the top box. I'll try and remember to look it out tomorrow, but there is every chance it has nothing to do with the blood run. Shocked Shocked

Just a post to bump this one onto the new posts section.

Had a reminder email today from Jim Conway to say that this is still taking place.
